Chapter Twelve

Cassia

One of the girls was gone.

Cassia grit her teeth against the news and paced, something she rarely did, considering it an inelegant revelation that one was struggling to maintain control. And Cassia was always in control.

Always.

She’d only truly lost control a handful of times over the centuries, and each time the death count had numbered in the high thousands. No one wanted that, especially not her; the mess was horrific, and she was fond of this particular villa. With its vast stretches of rich, white Carrera marble, they’d never wash out every trace of blood. She’d forever be reminded that good help was hard to come by, their failures becoming her own by association. And failure was unacceptable.

She’d made what was intended to be a quick pitstop at one of her favorite estates along the Mediterranean, atop the island of what was currently known as Sardinia, though her estate had been there long before it had taken that name. Flying for extended periods depleted her energy, and it wasn’t wise to do too often, but she’d been in the mood to celebrate. Little felt more freeing than flying along air currents as gracefully as a bird. It was in those moments that Cassia experienced the full extent of her power, so far beyond the limitations of her previous humanity. It was then that she felt truly untouchable.

Her scientists were poised to take their experiments to the next level. They’d gone as far as they could with animal control subjects. Now it was time to see how well the werewolves Cassia had bred for this purpose integrated her immortality magic.

But the girl was gone.

Cassia ceased her pacing along the veranda to snap her head up at the handful of vampires standing in a line behind her. The view beyond her was of a bright blue sea, but not one of the vampires glanced at it, not even as the sun shimmered across its turbulent surface, trying to snag their attention.

“How did this happen?” Cassia asked of Édouard in a steady voice that vibrated with barely concealed danger. Édouard had been with Cassia the longest, since he became a vampire four centuries before and she’d guided him through his bloodlust after his sire abandoned him.

Édouard already stood ahead of the others, but now he took another step forward, flashing his balding blond pate as he bowed toward his mistress. Though he’d been turned in his early thirties, he’d forever be stuck in the stage of premature balding. His face, however, was youthful as he didn’t shirk his mistress’ cutting gaze.

“The girl escaped when everyone else in the monastery was sleeping, Mistress. Her absence wasn’t noticed until after the morning devotion, when she didn’t arrive to break her fast.”

Cassia could feel her nostrils flaring, and she forced herself to pull in deep, calming breaths. “So she could have escaped any time after sundown.”

“That’s correct, Mistress.”

“And she climbed all the way down the mountain in the dark? On her own?”

“It would appear so, Mistress.
